Mice lacking CNDP2 were unable to produce lac-phe after exercise, ate more and packed more fat than mice with normal CNDP2 activity.
“We estimate that the lac-phe pathway is involved in about 25% of the anti-obesity effect of exercise,” Long said.
Long and his team also showed that when lac-phe was given to obese mice, the mice were not hungry and quit a high-calorie diet. “I saw their food intake suppressed by about 30%,” Long said. “It led to weight loss, fat loss, and improved glucose tolerance, indicating a reversal of diabetes.”
“We thought,’Wow, all this evidence really suggests that lac-phe goes to the brain to suppress feeding,'” Long said.
Before we all start looking for lac-phe on drugstore shelves, Long digs deeper into the mechanism of how lac-phe suppresses hunger signals, although this finding is exciting. I warn you that this is just the beginning of a series of studies. It also means focusing on which receptors in the brain’s lac-phe are targeted. He said that was their next step.
