COVID hospitalization in LA County again top 600
Los Angeles (CNS) —The number of hospital patients in Los Angeles County infected with COVID-19 crawled over the 600 mark again on Wednesday, but health officials reported about 5,700 new viral cases.
According to state statistics, as of Wednesday, the county hospital had 606 COVID-positive patients, up from 579 on Tuesday. Of those patients, 65 were being treated in the intensive care unit. This is an increase from 60 people the day before.
Health officials point out that many COVID-positive patients were actually admitted to the hospital for reasons other than the virus and only learned that they were infected at the time of admission.
Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer told the supervisory board on Tuesday that 40% of current COVID-positive patients in the county are being treated specifically for COVID. The other 60% were hospitalized for other health reasons. However, she states that all virus-positive patients require additional infection control measures at the hospital, regardless of why they were hospitalized.
The county on Wednesday reported 5,693 new infections, increasing the cumulative total from the entire pandemic to 3,047,469. Nine more virus-related deaths were announced, bringing the county-wide death toll to 32,236.
The average daily rate of people who tested positive for the virus rose to 6.7%. According to Feller, positive rates are likely to rise in the coming weeks, as many schools in the county, which make up the majority of weekly COVID tests, are on summer vacation on Tuesday.
If COVID hospitalizations continue to grow at a pace from the past two weeks, Feller said the county will move to the “high” viral activity category of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by late June. She said that if the county stayed in the “high” category for two consecutive weeks, the county would re-impose a universal indoor mask obligation.
But Feller said there was no reason to wait for people to start wearing masks again.
“Now I want to encourage everyone to use your mask,” Feller said. “… You don’t have to wait until things get worse.”
Masks are still essential in high-risk environments such as medical facilities, locations on transport vehicles, transport centers and airports, correctional facilities, and long-term care facilities.
The county is currently in the CDC’s “medium” level COVID activity. If the average daily rate of new COVID-related hospitalizations exceeds 10 per 100,000 residents, or if the proportion of beds occupied by COVID-positive patients exceeds 10%, move to the High category.
Both numbers have risen slowly over the past few weeks, with new arrivals reaching 7.2 per 100,000 as of Tuesday, up from 6.4 last Thursday. The proportion of beds in the county was 3.3% as of Tuesday, up from 3.1% on Thursday.
