OU Health has begun historic clinical trials of anti-cancer drugs manufactured in Oklahoma
Oklahoma City — OU Health announced on Wednesday that the Stephenson Cancer Center will begin historic trials of the anti-cancer drug OK-1 developed in Oklahoma.
Developed by researcher Dr. Doris Benbrook without the support of a pharmaceutical company, the drug is being tested in humans in Phase 1 clinical trials. According to OU Health, Benbrook began researching this compound over 25 years ago.
The drug is initially given to women with advanced ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancer.
“It’s very exciting to be able to test OK-1 in clinical trials,” said Benbrook, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at OU Medical College. “This drug is currently not available anywhere else in the world. We believe it has great potential for treating cancer without causing toxic side effects.”
According to OU Health, OK-1 is derived from the natural compound vitamin A.
“The human body uses vitamin A to make retinoic acid, a nutrient that supports healthy functioning,” they said in a Wednesday announcement. “Several forms of retinoic acid, and synthetic versions called retinoids, have been used to treat cancers such as leukemia, but both are highly toxic and patients often resist their effectiveness. Her aim is to kill cancer cells, but a better version of the drug, which is less toxic to normal cells. “
Phase 1 clinical trials help determine the maximum dose of new drug that can be safely administered without causing serious side effects. OK-1 has been extensively tested in laboratories and animal research models, but its actual effect is unknown until it is given to humans. Preclinical studies of the drug have proven to be effective without causing serious side effects or birth defects.
