When the blue light swirls in the night sky of New Zealand, Stargazer “gets a little crazy” | New Zealand
New Zealand Stargazer was in awe of the strange swirling light formation in the night sky on Sunday night.
At around 7:25 pm, Alasdair Burns, an astronomical guide to Stewart Island / Rakiura, received a text from a friend. Go outside and look at the sky. “As soon as we actually went out, it was very clear what he was pointing to,” Burns said.

The country’s starry sky and amateur astronomy social media groups were lit up by people posting photos and questions about phenomena visible from most of the South Island. There are many theories, from UFOs to foreign rockets to commercial light displays.
“A premonition from our orbital black hole,” said one Stargazer. “The aliens are back,” another commented.
Professor Richard Easther, a physicist at the University of Auckland, said the phenomenon was “strange but easy to explain.”
Clouds of that nature sometimes occurred when the rocket put the satellite into orbit, he said.
“When the propellant is released backwards, it essentially produces water and carbon dioxide, which temporarily forms clouds in the sunlit space,” says Easther. “The shape of the satellite’s orbit and the way we sit against the Sun. These combinations were just right to create these completely wacky clouds visible from the South Island.”
Easther said the rocket in question was probably a launch from Globalstar. SpaceXThe company sent to low earth orbit off Cape Canaveral, Florida on Sunday.
