Thirty-eight days after the surviving mice recovered, one group received a moderate dose of MPTP, which normally does not cause neuronal loss.

The control group was given saline. The animals were sacrificed and the brain was examined two weeks later.

Researchers have found that COVID-19 infection alone has no effect on dopaminergic neurons in the basal ganglia.

However, mice given moderate doses of MPTP after recovery from infection showed the classic pattern of neuronal loss found in Parkinson’s disease.

This increased susceptibility after COVID-19 infection is comparable to that reported in influenza trials, suggesting that both viruses may equally increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

Researchers plan to determine if the vaccine can reduce the increase in Parkinson’s disease associated with previous SARS-CoV-2 infections.
