West Nile virus-borne mosquitoes found in Kent County
Grand Rapids, Michigan-Three mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were found in two postal codes in Kent County.
Officials at the Kent County Health Department announced Tuesday that tests revealed the presence of virus-bearing mosquitoes in 49504 and 49525 postcodes. No cases of humans infected with the virus have been reported in Kent County.
The 49504 zip code is defined primarily on the West Side of Grand Rapids, and the 49525 zip code applies to part of the Plainfield and Grand Rapids townships.
“Finding these cases with mosquitoes should remind everyone in West Michigan that the West Nile virus season is approaching,” Brendan, who oversees the Health Department’s hygienist. Earl said in a statement.
“It is important to take precautions to prevent people from being bitten by mosquitoes.”
West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes of the genus Musca, and virus-related symptoms include headaches, body aches, arthralgias, and fatigue. According to the Department of Health, only about 20 percent of people infected with the virus will notice the condition.
Most complete recovery, but some fatigue may last for weeks or months. According to Ministry of Health officials, 1 in 150 people can develop serious illnesses affecting the central nervous system.
Authorities say some of the damage can be permanent, and in rare cases the disease can lead to death.
West Nile has no vaccine or cure, so the best cure is prevention. Health officials recommend light-colored mosquito repellent that contains 10-35% diet and stays indoors at dusk.
Since mosquitoes breed in stagnant pools, removing or refreshing water from containers that collect water, such as bird tubs, children’s pools, and water bottles for pets, can help control local residents.
