Rutgers wants photos of ticks to study the epidemic of tick-borne diseases
Rutgers University wants a picture of your tick.
Researchers hope to work with the general public to help map the distribution, species, and activity levels of these hematophage parasites. That information helps us better understand the prevalence of tick-borne diseases that make humans sick.
“The purpose of this effort is to better understand who is biting which tick and where,” said Dyna Fonseca, director of the Vector Biology Center at Rutgers University, in a news release. “We are asking people to submit the mites they come across in their daily lives while living, working and visiting New Jersey.”
Researchers plan to use this information to create a map of New Jersey that shows when and where different types of mites are active. The Vector Biology Center also contains information on effective repellents against mites and how to reduce their habitat.

In a news release, Fonseka said the distribution of tick species throughout New Jersey changed over time due to the conversion of farmland to forests and the recovery of host populations such as white-tailed deer.
Researchers need high-quality close-up photos of ticks with bright backgrounds and objects such as coins for size comparisons. They are also seeking information on where and when mites were found.
