GP says the second Covid-19 booster, essential to protect the “pressured” health system

The second Covid-19 booster shot is an important step in protecting vulnerable New Zealanders and the country’s “pressured” health care system, a prominent general practitioner said.

Starting Tuesday, New Zealanders over the age of 50 and those at high health risk will be eligible for a second Covid-19 booster shot.

Eligibility was also extended to include health, elderly care, and disability care workers over the age of 30 six months after the last booster immunization.

Bryan Betty, Medical Director of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and Porirua GP, said it was important not to be content with the Covid-19 epidemic.

“Covid is still prevalent in our community and those groups are still at risk of adverse consequences of contacting Covd-19,” Betty said.

The flu epidemic this season and now puts more pressure on the country’s health system, Betty said.

“This booster is a step towards reducing current and future pressure,” Betty said.

Anyone over the age of 50 could get a second booster and was recommended for people over the age of 65, or for Maori and Pacific people over the age of 50 and people with severe immunodeficiency.

Covid-19Response Minister Ayesha Verrall said the combination of Omicron and the flu has made this winter more difficult than usual.

“The best thing we can do to prevent New Zealanders and their families from being hospitalized is to get up-to-date information on influenza and Covid-19 vaccinations and boosters,” said Dr. Verrall.

People were advised to postpone the second booster after 3 months of Covid-19 infection, and the injection was not recommended for pregnant and healthy people.
