Cook County returns to higher COVID-19 alert levels, CDC says

Cook County is again at a high COVID-19 alert level.

The county fell from high to medium levels on June 16, but was pushed back above the high threshold of the CDC by a slight increase in hospitalization reported by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.

The county’s new positive COVID-19 cases and new hospitalization levels are slightly above the moderately specified levels. For every 100,000 people, Cook County has 202 new cases and 10.2 hospitalizations. The CDC sets high thresholds for 200 new cases and 10 hospitalizations.

Chicago remains at a moderate level, with fewer new cases and hospitalizations than Cook County. COVID-19 indicators in other cities are stable, city health officials said. DuPage and Lake counties are currently experiencing high infection rates.

City officials urged Cook County residents to wear masks in public places, especially indoors and in crowded areas, and to meet others outdoors and at social distances where possible.

According to Chicago’s COVID-19 dashboard, in Chicago, the average of new cases for 7 days dropped to 653 on Friday. The same number was 832 a week ago, reaching nearly 7,000 at the peak of the Omicron surge in January, the highest since the pandemic began in early 2020.

The city’s positive rate soared from 6.4% to 10.7%. This may be related to a sharp drop in tests associated with the end of the school year.

According to the Chicago Public Health Service, the number of counties in the country increased slightly last week at high or medium levels. Most of the high and middle level counties are in the west and Florida.
