COVID-19 vaccine available to children in Baja California
Tijuana (Border report) — As of this week, children up to the age of 5 are allowed to receive COVID-19 vaccination throughout the city and Baja California.
This is one of the few regions in Mexico where vaccines are available to all children ages 5-11.
So far, only children who are considered to belong to a high-risk group due to the underlying disorder or illness have been vaccinated.
Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he wanted adults to be vaccinated before children.
In April, Mexican health officials announced that the date had not been announced, but that the child would eventually be immunized.
People are encouraged to make reservations online to receive priority, as those without reservations can vaccinate their children on a first-come, first-served basis.
According to Baja California officials, the state will soon have access to 54,000 Pfizer brand doses for children.
To date, approximately 41,000 children have been enrolled in the vaccine.
Mexico census figures show that there are 340,000 children eligible to vaccinate Baja California.
Health officials in Baja say they believe that an estimated 25 percent of these children have already fired north of the US border.
