S. Africa records a second monkeypox case that is not linked to travel

June 28 (Reuters)-South Africa recorded a second case of monkeypox in a 32-year-old male patient in Cape Town who had never traveled, the Ministry of Health said Tuesday.
The country reported the first case of monkeypox last week, which was also unrelated to travel. read more
Monkeypox is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. It is endemic in parts of Africa, but not endemic in South Africa.
Health officials say contact tracing is underway.
“The source and association of the case is under investigation,” the South African Ministry of Health said in a statement, adding that there is a high probability of local infection.
Outbreaks of viral disease have been reported in more than 40 countries where monkeypox is not endemic. This viral disease spreads through close contact and was first discovered in monkeys. read more
