The FDA Panel recommends updating the COVID-19 vaccine as the virus evolves.
WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Vaccines targeting the new COVID-19 mutant may arrive this fall after the advisory board has voted to recommend a vaccine renewal.
The FDA’s advisory board states that the COVID-19 vaccine needs to be renewed to protect the population from evolving viruses.
“We need to take action as vaccines become less effective and risks meet this fall,” said one FDA advisory board member.
“This will provide the right vaccine in case of the need for booster immunity in the fall,” said another FDA advisory board member.
Josh Michaux, Associate Director of the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Global Health Policy, says current vaccines now offer less protection.
“The original vaccines that have been used in the United States so far were created using the original form of the virus,” Michaux explained.
Once developed and approved, health authorities may recommend alternative shots starting with older, at-risk individuals.
Schools already require students to be vaccinated against many illnesses, but Michaux still states that students are unlikely to need the COVID-19 vaccine.
If there are a lot of people who say, “I don’t think it’s a problem, I don’t want to get another vaccine, I don’t think it’s worth it,” there are probably some. Vulnerable people who would not have been otherwise, “Michaux said.
Although children are unlikely to become seriously ill, health professionals recommend vaccination with COVID-19.
