The average age of the entire sample was 54.3 years, with 1,973 participants being female (57.9%). Of them, 1,167 (59.1%) were postmenopausal. Premenopausal women were 30-59 years old. Postmenopausal women were 45 to 95 years old.
Hypertension was present in 1,208 participants (35.4%), and about half (660) suffered from uncontrollable hypertension.
For participants over the age of 45, after adjusting for age and vascular risk factors, the median white matter hyperintensity was 0.94 mL for postmenopausal women and 0.72 mL for men.
Among women aged 45 to 59 years, the median volume of white matter hyperintensity in postmenopausal women was 0.51 mL, compared to 0.33 mL in premenopausal women.
Women with uncontrolled hypertension were more burdened with white matter hyperintensity than men, which was not related to menopause.
The limitation of the study was that the menopausal status was self-reported, acknowledged by Breteller and co-authors. The researchers did not have information about the age of onset of menopause or whether the participants were in the peri-menopausal period.
