Decreased COVID-19 vaccination rates in children and teens | News

Children and teens in San Diego County are less likely to be vaccinated against COVID-19 than the entire eligible population, the County Health and Welfare Department announced today.

Local data up to June 29, 2022 show that:

  • Of the 239,401 San Diego people aged 12 to 17, 182,035 or 76% completed the primary vaccine series.
  • Of the 310,643 children between the ages of 5 and 11, 114,748 or 36.9% receive the primary vaccine series.
  • Of the 207,723 children aged 6 months to 4 years, only 3,323 or 1.6% are partially vaccinated. This percentage is expected to be low as COVID-19 vaccines in this age group have only recently been recommended.

By comparison, 83.8% of the total population covered by the COVID-19 vaccine has completed the primary vaccine series.

“The COVID-19 vaccine protects not only the vaccinated people, but also those around them,” said County Public Health Officer Wilma J. Wooten, MD, MPH. “Children are unaffected by COVID-19 and can develop serious complications. Parents need to make sure their children take all the recommended doses of the vaccine.”

For COVID-19 boosters, the proportion of children aged 5 to 17 and teens is even lower.

A total of 161,561 San Diego people between the ages of 12 and 17 are eligible for boosters, but only 64,147 or 39.7% received boosters. Only 12.2% or 10,365 local children between the ages of 5 and 11 received boosters, while 84,970 were eligible for boosters. By comparison, 57.3% of eligible 2,394,907 San Diego received boosters. Boosters are not yet recommended for children from 6 months to 4 years old.

“COVID-19 vaccination and booster immunization can help prevent serious illness. If you don’t have all the recommended doses of vaccine, get them now,” said Uten.

Vaccination progress:

  • At least one vaccination: Over 2.98 million people, or 94.7% of San Diego people over the age of 5, are at least partially vaccinated.
  • Complete vaccination: 2.63 million or more or 83.8%.
  • Boosters administered: 1,372,612 or 2,394,907 57.3% of eligible San Diego.
