The Bavarian Nordic A / S said Friday that the US Department of Health and Human Services ordered an additional 2.5 million doses of a liquid-frozen form of the monkeypox vaccine.
The Danish-based company said that the delivery of vaccines under this agreement, known as Jynneos in the United States, will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022 and will continue until early next year.
The US Department of Health and Human Services’ Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Agency has already ordered 500,000 doses of vaccine a few weeks ago in response to reports of monkeypox outbreaks.
According to Bavarian Nordic, a total of 4.4 million doses will be given in 2022 and 2023, along with a previous government order calling for 1.4 million doses in 2020.
Jynneos is the only vaccine currently approved by regulatory agencies in the United States for use against monkeypox.
The doses sent to the United States are made from bulk vaccines that have already been manufactured. It is also used to make a freeze-dried version of Jynneos, awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.
U.S. health officials announced this week that they will expand their efforts to control the spread of monkeypox, a viral disease that has been identified in more than 300 people nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention not only confirms exposure to monkeypox, but also recommends vaccines to people with presumed exposure.
