Influenza continues to rise in Oceana, southern Africa
Influenza activity is increasing in some temperate countries of the Southern Hemisphere, including Australia, New Zealand and southern Africa. But at the global level, levels have fallen following the peak in March, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a global influenza update that roughly covers the first half of June.
Other regions where the rise is seen are in South America, where H3N2 is the predominant stock, and Chile in southern China.
Of the respiratory samples tested positive for influenza by the National Influenza Institute in early June, 97.5% were influenza A and 97.7% of the subtyped influenza A samples were H3N2.
WHO is urging countries to monitor the co-circulation of influenza and COVID-19 and to strengthen influenza vaccination, especially to prevent serious illnesses in high-risk groups. We also urged clinicians to consider influenza in the differential diagnosis of groups at high risk of influenza complications.
