Santa Barbara Co. expects COVID-19 cases to increase prior to the weekend of July 4th
The COVID-19 vaccine is no longer available on the Santa Maria Fairpark County testing site, but staff say more and more people are coming to get tested.
It occurs after more than 600 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Santa Barbara County in the past week and 340 new infections have been recorded in Santa Maria in the last 14 days.
Alexander Kelly, a registered nurse and administrator of the Fairpark test site, said:
“It’s important to take care of ourselves, protect our colleagues and keep them free of infection,” said Francisca Martinez, who lined up to take the test on Friday.
People who come to the county’s inspection site say they have mild flu-like symptoms and want to be tested this Monday before celebrating the July 4th holiday.
“Make sure you’re wearing a mask. Make sure you’re tested before collecting. Try standing 6 feet away and limiting your indoor exposure.” Kelly advised.
Others appeared on the scene Friday morning and still wanted to vaccinate their families. They turned their backs and were taken to vaccination clinics in other nearby counties, such as the Sav-On Pharmacy on South Broadway in Santa Maria and the Walker Medical Wellness Clinic on Clark Avenue in Orkut.
“If people speak out more about their desire for a vaccine and they talk about it, we can get the vaccine back,” Kelly added.
New state data show that unvaccinated people in California are five times more likely to get the disease and eight times more likely to be hospitalized.
The percentage of fully vaccinated people in Santa Barbara County is just under 70%.
County data also show that active cases increased by 35% in the last two weeks, while hospitalizations decreased by 15% over the same time frame.
