Six monkeypox cases confirmed in Twin Cities, MDH raises awareness
Minneapolis- The Minnesota Department of Health has identified a total of six monkeypox cases in the state.
Cases include adults living in the Twin Cities area who have recently traveled or have had direct contact with the person who traveled. No one has been hospitalized and people are recovering.
The Department of Health believes that cases of community expansion may soon emerge, reflecting similar patterns outside of Minnesota. Authorities believe that not everyone with monkeypox seeks testing or treatment, and is worried that the infection can spread unless people seek medical care.
“Our current case is related to traveling outside Minnesota, but soon we will see cases among people who have never traveled or have no contact with people who have traveled, and in Minnesota. It shows that there is a spread within social networks, “says Dr. State Epidemiologist. Ruth Linfield.
Monkeypox is spread by close skin-to-skin contact with rashes, scabs, or other body fluids. Symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, swelling of the glands, and malaise. It is less infectious than other diseases such as COVID-19, measles, chickenpox and influenza. It can also be mistaken for a sexually transmitted disease.
Most people with monkeypox recover on their own. According to the health department, recovery usually takes 2-4 weeks.
