Johnson County reported 279 additional COVID-19 cases this week
The number of new coronavirus cases surged in Iowa during the week ending Sunday, with 4,403 reported cases, an increase of 12.4%. Last week there were 3,919 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Iowa is ranked 46th among the states where the coronavirus is the fastest to spread per capita, according to USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, cases of coronavirus in the United States increased by 11.8% from the previous week, and 800,077 cases were reported. With 0.95% of the country’s population, Iowa had 0.55% of the country’s cases last week. Nationwide, 38 states had more cases in the most recent week than in the previous week.

In Iowa, nine people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before that, 65 people were reported dead.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 796,611 people have been coronavirus-positive and 9,688 have died from the disease in Iowa, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 87,843,561 people are positive and 1,017,848 have died.
