Increasing cases of monkeypox in San Francisco raise concerns among health authorities
As cases continue to grow in the San Francisco-Bay Area and around the state, health officials have expressed concern about the ongoing outbreak of monkeypox.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California has the second highest number of monkeypox cases, 117. This is second only to New York, which reported 122 cases.
In San Francisco alone, there are 40 of these cases, almost double the 24 cases reported last week.
Several local clinics are tracking infections to at least one event that occurred during San Francisco Pride. The organizers posted on Facebook over the weekend, and at least one of the participants tested positive for monkeypox. Monkeypox spreads primarily through skin-to-skin contact.
Dr. Tyler Tarmer, CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, urged calm. TerMeer said it is not only preventable but treatable, and his clinic is one of the few that is working to stay ahead of further surges.

“It can be transmitted in multiple ways, mainly seen in skin-to-skin contact, but can live in the clothing and materials of people who may have residual lesions,” TerMeer said. The monkeypox test is similar to the COVID swab test, but instead targets the skin.
TerMeer is recommended to be tested if it comes in contact with a person who tests positive for monkeypox or who develops a rash in the form of a ridge or lesion.
