Members of the LGBTQ community imbalanced by monkeypox
As the number of cases of monkeypox increases in Los Angeles County, there is an urgent action request from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation today.
“The incidents reported in LA County are known to be among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men,” said Adam Sukija-Cohen, AHF Director of Advocacy and Policy Research. I am.
The AHF is imbalanced in the effects of monkeypox and wants to step up efforts by public health authorities to reach out to members of the LGBTQ community.
“I understand the concerns about not blaming homosexuals,” said AHF President Michael Waynestein. “But if the concern about not stigmatizing them is more important than actually informing them, that’s a big problem.”
On Thursday morning, LA County public health officials reported 47 possible confirmed cases.
“The county wouldn’t say that the recent pride event contributed to the epidemic of monkeypox. I think it’s a misguided concern,” Weinstein said.
The AHF said clients are considered at high risk of monkeypox according to the standards of LA County and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, the county has only a few thousand doses, insufficient to inoculate high-risk patients and almost inadequate to administer to patients exposed to monkeypox. The Foundation has not received the vaccine to administer.
“In the meantime, if they don’t intend to give us a vaccine, they need to educate us,” Sukija-Cohen said.
Weinstein also sought more resources to study the disease to understand why it affects members of the LGBTQ community more than others.
Symptoms of monkeypox include fever and body pain, which persists after about 3-5 days.
Infectious disease expert Dr. Suman Radhakrishna said that anyone can become infected with monkeypox while the medical community is beginning to see more cases with members of the homosexual community.
“The conclusion that the public must understand is that it is skin-to-skin contact,” said Radhakrishna. “People who have pain, those who have an active illness will give it to someone else.”
