Ghana records the first suspicious case of Marburg virus disease in history

Health officials in Ghana say they have identified for the first time two fatal cases of Marburg virus, a relative of the Ebola virus.
In a statement Thursday, Ghana Health Service said two cases of Marburg virus disease (MVD) were detected in the Ashanti area, about 250 kilometers from the capital, Accra.
“Blood samples were sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research,” the statement added. “Preliminary results suggest that the infection is due to the Marburg virus.”

Applying standard procedures, the samples were sent to the Pasteur Institute in Senegal, the World Health Organization (WHO) Cooperation Center for confirmation, the statement added.
According to the WHO website, two patients in the southern region of Ashanti (unrelated to death) showed symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting.
To date, 34 people have been quarantined and contact with two infected individuals has been monitored.
According to the statement, the local health department is “currently investigating further cases and contacts.”
If the Ghana incident is confirmed by WHO, Marburg will be detected for the second time in West Africa. Guinea confirmed a single case in September 2021.
The Marburg virus is transmitted by infected persons or animals from direct contact with body fluids, blood, and other excretions from affected persons or animals. The incubation period of the disease is 2 to 21 days.
According to WHO, Marburg is a disease with a case fatality rate of up to 88%.
Future patients may suffer from fever, bloody diarrhea, gum bleeding, skin bleeding, eye bleeding, and hematuria.
