First case of monkeypox found in New Zealand
The ministry said in a statement tonight that the person, in his thirties, lives in Auckland and has recently returned from an overseas trip to a country where cases of monkeypox have been reported.
Currently, there are 50 countries reporting cases of monkeypox.
The ministry said the arrival in New Zealand was not unexpected given the rise in international incidents, including Australia.
“We have already taken steps to prepare for the arrival of monkeypox.
“Last month, monkeypox was officially listed as a notable disease, and we now have access to the tools needed to control the spread of the disease, such as quarantine orders and the preparation of contact tracing features.”
The monkeypox PCR test was available at a New Zealand laboratory and was used to detect this first case.
Very few cases were advised to monitor their symptoms. There was no evidence of community infection here.
To protect the privacy of incidents and contacts, the ministry does not provide additional information about them, but incident monitoring will continue.
Public health advice
Cases of monkeypox outside of endemic countries have been identified primarily between gay and bisexual men and men who have sex with men, and international cases are centered around the events in which they occur.

The majority of people with monkeypox can be safely managed at home and there are few deaths from monkeypox worldwide.
Medical professionals were warned to remain vigilant for all possible cases of monkeypox, especially in people who recently arrived from the country reporting the case.
As reports of monkeypox came out internationally, the ministry provided information about the virus on its website. The ministry also provided advice to public health departments, primary health care institutions, and sexual health clinics to help identify potential cases.
