NMDOH reports a possible case of monkeypox in New Mexico
Santa Fe, New Mexico — The New Mexico Department of Health reported the first possible case in the monkeypox state on Monday.
NMDOH reported that the patient had returned from an out-of-state trip and was likely exposed to illness by contact. The person is reportedly in good health and has been quarantined at home after a positive test at the end of Friday.
“Monkeypox is a very rare disease in the United States, and it is important to keep in mind that monkeypox does not spread easily among people,” said David R. Scrase, Deputy Secretary-General of NMDOH, in a press release. I mentioned in. “Although the risk for most people remains low, anyone in close contact with a person with monkeypox is at risk of infection, which is a public health concern for all of us.”
Symptoms of monkeypox usually begin within 21 days of exposure to the virus. It begins with the following flu-like symptoms:
- heat
- headache
- Myalgia and back pain
- Swelling of the lymph nodes
- cold
- Malaise
It can then progress to rashes and sores that often appear on the hands, feet, chest, face, and genitals. Most infections last about 2-4 weeks and it is recommended to isolate them at home until they are no longer infectious. The sign that it is no longer infectious is when all the scabs have fallen and fresh skin has grown.
Monkeypox is rare, but through close personal contact (often skin-to-skin contact) with the person suffering from monkeypox, or through objects, fabrics, used by the person suffering from monkeypox, Or it spreads by contacting the surface.
People with symptoms should be immediately quarantined and examined.
