NM officials say the first possible case of monkeypox is here

On Monday, the New Mexico Department of Health announced the state’s first possible case of monkeypox, a rare disease caused by a virus being tracked by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the Ministry of Health, the patient has recently returned from outside the state and is likely exposed by contact. The DOH Institute of Science department will conduct the first test on Friday and the CDC is working to confirm the results.

The patient is fine and isolated at home.

“Monkeypox is a very rare disease in the United States, and it is important to keep in mind that monkeypox does not spread easily among people,” Dr. David Skrais, Deputy Minister of Health, said in a statement. .. “Although the risk for most people remains low, anyone in close contact with a person with monkeypox is at risk of infection, which is a public health concern for all of us.”

According to DOH, the virus can spread through skin-to-skin contact or close contact such as a kiss.
