Wichita, Kansas (KWCH)-A worldwide disease has spread to Himawari The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has identified the first estimated case of monkeypox in the state. Health officials said the patient was a resident of Johnson County who recently traveled outside the state.
Witness News on Monday spoke with Dr. Tom Moore of the Wesley Medical Center. This is not a major concern for Sedgwick County at the moment, but there is an easy way to avoid getting infected with the virus altogether. In understanding what the virus is and how to prevent it, Dr. Moore said there is only one way to get monkeypox.
“It is transmitted from person to person through intimate contact and skin contact,” he said.
When infected, people show certain symptoms.
“Everyone with monkeypox may not have fever or swollen lymph nodes, but there is a rash, and the rash is very characteristic,” Dr. Moore said. “There are small lesions on the skin, not on the skin.”
The only known case of monkeypox in Kansas is in Johnson County, but Dr. Moore said it is likely to eventually be seen in Wichita and other states.
“Probably one case is likely to occur in Sedgwick County and western Kansas,” Dr. Moore said. “But let’s be clear, this is a disease that is not easily transmitted in the community. It is transmitted efficiently from person to person, but requires close contact with the skin.”
So how do you avoid the infection? Dr. Moore said it was easy because the most common way people get monkeypox is through sexual contact.
“The best way to avoid this particular viral infection is to use a condom-like barrier protection when you have a new sexual partner,” he said.
The virus is generally easy to evade and cannot be easily transmitted without close contact, but Dr. Moore said it is still at risk.
“At this point, the risk is low, but it is risky, so if you find yourself in the category of an individual at risk, you need to take precautions,” he said.
Dr. Moore also said there was a monkeypox vaccine, which is currently in short supply.
