Researchers discover that relaxed methadone rules look safe
With the coronavirus pandemic closing the country in March 2020, the US government told the methadone clinic that stable patients with opioid addiction could take their medications at home without supervision.
The opioid itself, methadone, can be dangerous in large quantities, and most patients need to take the drug daily in the clinic. It was not clear whether the relaxed takeaway policy would do more harm than good.
Currently, new studies on fatal overdose from January 2019 to August 2021 suggest that mitigation of access was safe. It did not result in more deaths, including remedies.
Studies have shown that the rate of deaths from overdose involving methadone decreased from 4.5% in January 2019 to 3.2% in August 2021.
The author wrote that this finding may help make the change permanent. They are US government researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Substance Abuse.
Dr. Neeraj Gandotra, Chief Medical Officer of the Federal Office that regulates the Methadone Clinic, called the early analysis “very promising.”
When the government relaxed, stable patients could receive 28 days of takeaway methadone, and unstable patients could receive 14 days. The clinic was able to figure out which patients were eligible. Many relied on criteria such as treatment time and lack of criminal activity.
More than 400,000 people in the United States take methadone as part of the treatment of opioid addictions such as heroin, fentanyl, and painkillers. When used correctly, methadone can stop the craving for drugs without causing high prices.
The study, published Wednesday at JAMA Psychiatry, found an increase in mortality from overall overdose containing methadone in March 2020. Then, in the months following the policy change, methadone deaths stabilized and other fatal overdose continued to increase.
Last year, more than 107,000 Americans died from drug overdose. This is a record of an overdose epidemic in the United States. The increase was caused by death involving fentanyl, cocaine and other stimulants.
