It is unclear whether these pre-stroke changes can be used to predict who will have a stroke. The exact reason why depressive symptoms occur before a stroke should be investigated in future studies.

According to a study, in a pre-stroke assessment, 29% of those who tried to have a stroke met the criteria for possible depression compared to 24% of those who did not have a stroke.
However, at the time of the stroke, 34% of people met the criteria for possible depression, compared to 24% of those who did not have a stroke.
Blochl said: “This suggests that the increased symptoms of pre-stroke depression are mostly subtle changes and are not always clinically detectable.
“But even a slight increase in depressive symptoms, especially those associated with mood and malaise, can be a sign that a stroke is likely to occur.”
She added: “It is unclear if these pre-stroke changes can be used to predict who will have a stroke.
“The exact reason why depressive symptoms occur before a stroke needs to be investigated in future studies.
“The study also emphasizes why doctors need to monitor the symptoms of depression in people who have had a stroke for a long time.”
The findings are published in the Neurology Journal.
