NYU Langone’s doctor reveals that he has successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into a human
New York -This is a major step forward in the world of organ donation. NYU doctors recently transplanted pig hearts into two brain-dead humans.
As CBS2’s Lisa Rosner reported on Tuesday, the results show that animal organs can play a major role in saving lives quickly.
Larry Kelly, a 72-year-old Vietnam veteran from Pennsylvania, loved fishing and her 33-year-old partner, Alice Michael.
“He loved to fix things and was very upset because he couldn’t fix my cancer,” Michael said.

Kelly died of a heart attack in June and was declared brain dead. Since he had a history of heart disease, including two open heart surgeries, his partner agreed with New York University to maintain his body for life support for research.
Last month, doctors flew to Virginia to remove and fly a heart of the same size in a genetically modified pig.

Just last week, a similar heart transplant was done at Styve Santotown’s 64-year-old Alba Capiano. NYU said a former teacher died of cardiac arrest, probably due to diabetic complications.
In this study, both Capuano and Kelly survived 72 hours after transplantation to see if the pig’s heart could catch up.
“I think it was one of the best things to see the pig’s heart pounding and beating in the human chest,” Montgomery said.

According to Moazami, 6 million people in the United States suffer from heart failure, but only a few thousand heart transplants are done each year.
Kelly’s family hopes that this study will lead to changes in other people who are struggling to get a transplant.
“He was a hero for the rest of his life and left the hero,” Michael said.
According to doctors, the next step in this study will include a long-term transplant study. This past fall, NYU doctors have succeeded in transplanting a pig kidney into a recently deceased human..
