West Nile virus detected in Massachusetts for the first time this year
Rhode Island Providence (WPRI) — Massachusetts Public Health Service (DPH) has tested East Nile mosquito samples positive for West Nile virus.
This is the first time West Nile virus has been detected in Massachusetts this year, according to DPH. Samples were collected on July 11th.
So far this year, no human or animal cases of West Nile virus have been reported, and DPH states that there is no high risk of the disease at this time. Another mosquito-borne disease, Triple Equine Encephalitis (EEE), has not yet been detected in any sample.
“The West Nile virus is part of the Massachusetts summer, and we expect to see infected mosquitoes at this time of the year,” said public health commissioner Marglet Cook. “Now is the time to start taking steps to prevent mosquito bites.”
The virus usually infects humans by being bitten by infected mosquitoes. Last year, DPH reported 11 human cases of West Nile virus.
“Simple actions can help protect you from mosquito bites and possible mosquito bites,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Catherine Brown. She “uses mosquito repellents that contain EPA-registered ingredients, wears clothing to reduce exposed skin, drains accumulated water, and repairs window screens.”
