Attention to the CDC, a virus found in multiple states that can cause serious illness in babies
According to federal authorities, healthcare providers in several states have reported viruses that can cause seizures, meningitis, and other serious illnesses in infants younger than 3 months.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Issued an alert Notify physicians and public health departments that cases of parechovirus have been seen in newborns and infants since May.
The alert does not state which state experienced the infection in the infant or how many cases were reported.
The advisory states that it is not clear how the number of cases will be compared to previous seasons due to the lack of systematic surveillance of the parechovirus. However, the increase in testing in recent years may explain more cases, officials said.
According to the CDC, all positive cases recorded by the authorities include PeV-A3, one of the most common parechoviruses that causes severe illness.
The virus is a common pediatric pathogen that circulates in summer and autumn and spreads through sneezing, coughing, saliva, and feces, and does not cause less serious illness in children over 6 months, the agency said. .. Symptoms include rash, upper respiratory tract infection, and fever.
Experts examining the cerebrospinal fluid of infants with severe parechovirus infections have found that white blood cells have disappeared or are almost gone.
There is no cure for the virus.
This alert encourages doctors to test the virus and hospitalize the baby with the infection to prevent it from spreading to the nursery or neonatal intensive care unit.
