Monkeypox is more likely to go to Jacksonville, local doctors say
Jacksonville, Florida – As the number of monkeypox cases increases in the country, one health expert at UF Health Jacksonville says more is going on.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are currently over 1,800 cases across the United States.
As of Monday, July 18, there were approximately 154 monkeypox infections in Florida, according to the CDC. There were 93 cases in Georgia. Cases have been identified in the Broward, Collier, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Pinellas, and Seminole counties over the past 30 days, according to the Florida Department of Health. Broward was the most common, with 24 confirmed cases.
According to doctors, the number of cases is expected to increase nationwide as the data grows.
News4JAX spoke with Chad Neilsen, Head of Certification and Infection Prevention for UF Health Jacksonville. He said he believes it’s only a matter of time before the virus invades northeastern Florida. As of Monday, no cases have been reported in our area.

“We received potential causes of testing from some providers and patients who brought suspicious symptoms and lesions in the emergency department, but so far have received alternative diagnoses for those patients. I’ll do it, “said Nielsen.
