Fireworks are bad news for the lungs
Thursday, 02 July 2020 (HealthDay News)-New threat added to the risks posed by fireworks-May release toxic metals that can damage lungs.
These metals add color to the fireworks, according to researchers, who found harmful levels of lead in two of the twelve commercially available fireworks tested.
“Many people are careful to protect themselves from explosion injuries, but our results suggest that inhaling smoke from fireworks can cause long-term damage. The risk is It’s almost neglected,” says Terry Gordon, MD, NYU Langone Health Medicine in New York City, a professor at the Ministry of the Environment.
Gordon and his colleagues fired a commonly used firework in the United States in the lab, exposing mouse and human lung cells to low-dose particles to the average human daily air pollutant. Emissions were mimicked to collect emissions.
In addition to the major findings, they found that the release of particles from five types of fireworks significantly increased oxidation.
Fireworks often contain titanium, strontium, and copper in addition to lead, according to researchers.
They also analyzed 14 years of air quality samples from dozens of sites across the United States throughout the year and found that toxic metal levels were high in samples taken around Independence Day and New Year’s Eve celebrations. I found that other time of the year.
