Washington doctor tests Perth children to reveal why they don’t contract COVID-19

Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation has funded two projects to test asymptomatic young people.

Dr. Asha Bowen, deputy director of the Department of Infectious Diseases, says many are conducting investigations to find out why many people do not have a deadly disease.

Over the next 6 months, 50 random blood samples will be taken from the child each month and the child who has had ear, nose, and throat surgery wiped with a cotton swab.

In addition to WA’s DETECT program, approximately 18,500 people were tested and the DETECT school sanitized up to 4500 children. Everything is clear.

“We use a sample of the COVID test to see if there is any evidence that children may have unknowingly had the disease in the past,” explains Dr. Bowen.

The program also looks at why adults, rather than children, are infected with the deadly virus.

Last year, 40% of cases of influenza in Washington were children, but 4% of COVID-19 infections were children.

“It will also be prepared to answer questions about the vaccine, which proportion may need to be vaccinated when it becomes available,” says Dr. Bowen.

In Washington, 14 children have been infected by asymptomatic people, raising concerns about the threat of community expansion.

“What we are seeing in Victoria today is an increase in the number of cases and that can happen in Washington.”
