Bias means men who are more often referred to as “brilliant” than women

Thursday, July 02, 2020 (Health Day News)-When it comes to intelligence, men are more likely to be given lofty attributes than women, a new study has discovered.
The researchers note that these stereotyped views are the result of tacit prejudices that people don’t admit when they are asked directly.
“Stereotypes, which describe brilliance as a characteristic of men, are likely to bring women back into a broader, prestigious career,” said Daniel Storage, an associate professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of Denver.
“Understanding the prevalence and scale of this gender brilliance stereotype can signal future efforts to increase gender equality in career outcomes,” said senior research author Andrey Simpian. For the study, participants were given a quick classification task on their computer. They were shown a series of photos and were asked to press “E” if it was related to the male category or if it was related to a spectacular trait. In other trials, participants had to press “E” for photos related to women or stunning photos. The researchers documented and compared the timing of their responses.
Across five studies, including women and men in the United States, girls and boys in the United States at ages 9 and 10, and women and men in 78 other countries, researchers found a faster reaction and therefore more than women. Also discovered an implicit stereotype that connects radiance to men. The width of this stereotype was “impressive,” the researchers added.
But when participants were directly asked if men were smarter than women, they rejected the idea, the researchers noted.
“We have a PhD program at Harvard University,” said Tessa Charles Worth. “Especially interesting from this study is that people clearly say that they associate women with radiance. A stereotype that comes to mind when thinking about radiance.”
