Studies Find More Clues to Potential Causes of Severe Hepatitis Cases in Children

London, July 25 (Reuters)-The recent increase in cases of acute hepatitis in children is likely to be associated with a common childhood virus, two independent from British researchers. Studies suggest.
Countries around the world began reporting cases of severe liver inflammation or unexplained hepatitis in children in April 2022.
According to the World Health Organization, at least 1,010 cases are currently found in 35 countries. A total of 46 children needed a liver transplant and 22 died.

In a study led by the University of Glasgow and the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, another common virus, adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV2), is most often present and is involved in rare but severe liver complications. Researchers said it’s unclear whether AAV2 found in children’s samples is an indicator of previous adenovirus infections or is the cause itself. It has never been known to cause disease and cannot be replicated without a “helper virus” such as adenovirus.
They said that co-infection with AAV2 and adenovirus, or the less common herpesvirus HHV6, is a plausible explanation for cases of unexplained hepatitis in children and requires further study.
AAV2 was present in 96% of cases in both studies, including 37 cases in the UK and control groups together.
Scottish researchers have also discovered differences in the human leukocyte antigen genes in severely ill children.
The reason behind the timing of the outbreak remains unclear, but both teams suggested that the peak of adenovirus cases after the coronavirus blockade was lifted could be a factor.
