Case of monkeypox confirmed in Vancouver

Vancouver, WA (KPTV) – The Clark County Public Health Department is investigating confirmed cases of monkeypox in Clark County residents.
Public health was notified on Monday morning that a man in Clark County, who had not recently traveled, tested positive for monkeypox and was quarantined at home.
Clark County Public Health is working with him to identify people who may have been exposed. Currently, vaccination against the virus is recommended only for those who have had close contact with the infected person but have not yet developed the infection.
“We have identified the first case of monkeypox in Clark County, but the risk to the public is still very low,” said Dr. Alan Menick, Health Officer and Director of Public Health, Clark County. “Anyone can get monkeypox. However, unlike COVID-19, the monkeypox virus does not spread easily among humans.”
Monkeypox spreads through close contact with a symptomatic infected person.
- Infected person’s rash, scab, or direct contact with body fluids.
- Respiratory droplets (saliva) during direct and long-term face-to-face contact with an infected person.
- Contact with bedding, clothing or other objects contaminated with body fluids or pain of an infected person.
Monkeypox illness often begins with the following flu-like symptoms:
- heat.
- headache.
- muscle pain.
- Swelling of the lymph nodes.
- Malaise.
After a few days, the person develops a rash. The rash then turns into a raised ridge and is filled with liquid. The rash is usually found mainly on the face, arms, legs and hands. However, if infected during sexual contact, the rash can only occur on the genitals or anus.
Symptoms usually begin 7 to 14 days after exposure, but may appear 5 to 21 days after exposure. People with monkeypox are transmitted as soon as symptoms appear and continue to be transmitted until the rash is completely healed. Most people recover within 2-4 weeks, but the disease can be serious, especially for immunocompromised people, children, and pregnant people.
People who feel sick or have a rash or sore, or who have a partner who is ill or has a rash or sore, have sex or gathering, especially with close skin-to-skin contact or prolonged face-to-face contact. Should be avoided. Talk to your healthcare provider. Before going to the clinic, you should inform your health care provider if you are worried about monkeypox or if you have been in close contact with someone who has a rash or has been diagnosed with monkeypox.
