Hillsborough County Mosquito-borne Disease Recommendation

 


Tampa, Florida — Hillsborough County Florida Department of Health (DOH-Hillsborough) On Tuesday, we released a recommendation on mosquito-borne infections.

According to the ministry, arbovirus dengue has been detected in cases associated with travel abroad, adding that the risk to the general public is low.

Mosquito control in Hillsborough County And DOH-Hillsboro continue to monitor the situation.

DOH-Hillsborough calls on people to take basic precautions to prevent mosquito bites and limit exposure.

The department recommends using the “drainage and cover” method.

Drain the standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

  • Drain water from trash cans, gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flowerpots, or sprinklers or other containers of rainwater.
  • Discard old tires, bottles, pots, broken appliances and other unused items.
  • An empty, clean bird bath and pet basin at least twice a week.
  • A tarpaulin that does not collect water protects boats and vehicles from rain.
  • Keep your swimming pool in good condition and chlorinated. Empty plastic pool when not in use.

Cover your skin with clothing and repellents.

  • Clothes-Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves. This type of protection may be needed for people who have to work in areas with mosquitoes.
  • Repellent-Apply mosquito repellent to bare skin and clothing.
  • Always use repellents according to the label. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, paramentandiol, 2-undecanone and IR3535 are effective.
  • Use mosquito nets to protect children under the age of two months.
  • Check and repair door and window screens. Keep them closed and use air conditioning if possible.

The department also tells you to make sure the window screen is in good condition to reduce the chance of finding mosquitoes inside.

DOH-Hillsborough offers the following tips on the use of repellents.

  • Apply an insect repellent containing DEET (10-30%), picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, paramentandiol, 2-undecanone, or IR3535.
  • We handle clothing and gear with products containing 0.5%. Do not apply permethrin directly to the skin. Some sportswear and gear are pretreated with permethrin.
  • Use insect repellents approved by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) For exposed skin and clothing. EPA’s handy search tools can help you find the right product for your needs.
  • Follow the instructions on the product label, especially if it applies to children.
  • Apply the insect repellent to exposed skin or clothing, but do not apply it under clothing.
  • Always follow the instructions when applying insect repellent to your child. Do not use repellents containing DEET for babies under 2 months and lemon eucalyptus oil for babies under 3 years.
  • Avoid applying repellents to children’s hands. Adults should first apply a repellent to their hands and then transfer it to their child’s skin or clothing.
