A UN HIV and AIDS report found that the war between COVID-19 and Ukraine threatened efforts to combat illness.
The global response to HIV and AIDS is at “serious danger,” and the United Nations warns that the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine are affecting efforts to fight the virus.
Key Point:
- Global events have distracted funds from HIV, according to a UN report
- It is estimated that an additional $ 41 billion will be needed to end the virus as a global public health threat.
- According to the report, the number of cases is increasing in the Asia-Pacific region, which was previously declining.
A new report by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS) revealed that an estimated 1.5 million people were infected with HIV last year. This represents the slowest decline in the number of cases since 2016.
The initiative to fight the virus was affected by global events such as COVID and the Ukrainian War, and funds were diverted from HIV, the report said.
“Global AIDS control is at stake,” said Secretary-General Winnie Byanima.
The report states that new HIV infections have increased each year in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa over the years.
UNAIDS Deputy Secretary-General Matthew Kavanagh said the war in Ukraine and the global crisis in living costs are hampering the fight against the virus.
“In the last two years, HIV services have been disrupted in many countries, resources have shrunk and millions of lives have been compromised,” he said.
Last year, an estimated 38.4 million people worldwide lived with HIV.
About three-quarters of people who live with the virus receive antiretroviral treatment that can keep the virus under control and prevent further infections.
However, the report states that the number of people accessing HIV treatment has increased at the slowest rate in more than a decade.
It is estimated that an additional $ 29 billion ($ 41 billion) will be needed to combat the HIV epidemic in low- and middle-income countries and end the virus as a global public health threat.
“Many world leaders seem to forget about HIV,” said Adeeba Kamarulzaman, president of the International AIDS Society.
“We run the risk of going off track in an effort to end the global HIV epidemic.”
Filipino cases double in 5 years
UNAIDS said the number of cases is increasing in the previously declining Asia-Pacific region.
In Brazil, according to official data, about 770,000 people are diagnosed with HIV and live.
This is a country that was previously foretold as a success story by activists and governments, with an increase of about 10 percent within three years.
Maria Eduarda Aguiar da Silva, president of Grupo Pela Vidda, a non-profit organization of HIV and AIDS rights, said a broad and conservative attitude played a role.
“In a very conservative environment where you can’t talk about sexuality, it’s hard to talk about sexually transmitted diseases,” she said.
The Brazilian federal government closed its government sector, which was particularly focused on HIV, in 2019 and integrated it into a broader sector.
Ramon Nunes Mello, who was diagnosed with the virus in 2012, said racial and economic inequality also colored the HIV epidemic in Brazil.
“People who die of AIDS come from low color and low social class,” Melo said.
“They are the poorest black people and die due to lack of information and access to medicines. It is unrealistic for Brazil to return to it.”
Last year, the number of new cases of HIV increased to an estimated 21,000 in the Philippines, according to UNAIDS data.
This is more than double that of 2015.
The data also showed that the pandemic in 2020 reduced the number of Filipinos accessing HIV testing by 61 percent in a year.
Nenita Laude-Ortega, Country Program Manager, AIDS Healthcare Foundation Philippines, said the Philippines has a widespread acceptance of gay people, while homosexual aversion in some areas of society has hampered the reaction.
“This is usually due to religious groups, and more than 90 percent of the Philippines are Christians,” said Ms. Loud Ortega.
“Our use of condoms is very low, and in fact it is the church that disagrees with the use of condoms.”
