“Identifying the cause of death with a death certificate is not an exact science,” said Daniel Weinberger, lead author of a study at the Yale University School of Public Health, told Reuters.
“People who have COVID-19 and cause pneumonia may have listed pneumonia as a cause of death. In another jurisdiction, it may be COVID.” “The code of what a person has died varies greatly by person and jurisdiction.”
The researchers behind the study pointed out that the difference between reported coronavirus-related mortality and excess mortality varied from state to state.
“Several states showed good agreement between the reported number and total number of deaths from coronavirus. There was little difference between Washington and Minnesota, but between South Carolina and Texas. There are quite a few differences,” Weinberger told Reuters.
Weinberger said differences in reporting deaths from coronavirus were reduced by the availability of tests.
The investigation is conducted when the United States is experiencing a surge of incidents in several southern and western states. The US reported 52,789 new cases on Wednesday, the largest daily sum since the outbreak of the pandemic.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the United States recorded more than 2.7 million cases and more than 128,000 deaths.
