Coronavirus: olfaction and taste “almost always improved”

Research found that nearly 90% of people who lost their odor or taste after being infected with Covid-19 improved or recovered within a month.
In an Italian study, 49% of patients had full recovery of their sense of smell and taste, and 40% reported improvement.
However, 10% said their symptoms remained unchanged or worsened.
Given the size of the pandemic, experts warn that hundreds of thousands may face long-term problems.
Changes in or smell of someone’s odor or taste-is now recognized as a core symptom of coronaviruses.

According to NHS advice, anyone who has experienced them should be quarantined and tested with their family.
A team of international researchers investigated 187 Italians who were infected with the virus but were not ill enough to be hospitalized.
They were asked to assess their sense of smell or taste immediately after diagnosis and again one month later.
A total of 113 people reported changes in smell and taste.

- 46 reports improvement in symptoms
- Twelve had unchanged or worsening symptoms
Those with severe symptoms took longer to recover.
One of the researchers, Dr. Claire Hopkins, president of the British Rhinological Society, said her team is now doing more research on people with long-term symptoms.
She told the BBC:
“For those who recover faster, the virus may be affecting only the cells inside the nose.
“For those with a slower recovery, the virus may also have affected nerves involved in the odor. It may take longer for these nerve cells to repair and regenerate.”
