Sask.Response to monkeypox questioned at international conference in Montreal

Saskatchewan’s track record in combating infectious diseases has been questioned on the international stage.

Last week, the 24th International AIDS Conference was held in Montreal. Given the spread of cases in recent months, the increasing number of monkeypox cases worldwide has become a topic of discussion.

One researcher expressed concern that some localities were not taking such outbreaks seriously enough, singling out Saskatchewan in the process.

“We know there are many challenges in Saskatchewan, both with HIV and sexually transmitted infections, especially among vulnerable populations, including indigenous communities,” McGill University, Montreal.

While Saskatchewan only reported two monkeypox cases in July, 78 countries have reported more than 19,000 cases in the past few months.

Comparisons have been made with HIV because the disease is most easily transmitted through prolonged face-to-face or sexual contact. The majority of reported cases were among men who had sex with other men.

Saskatchewan has a long history of rising HIV rates, often the highest in Canada.

There will be a record-breaking 237 diagnoses in 2021, up nearly 30% from the previous year and more than double the national average.

The state also suffers from other sexually transmitted diseases.

For example, according to Public Health Canada, the rate of syphilis cases in Saskatchewan increased by 891% from 2016 to 2020, also two to three times higher than the national rate. Many of these increases are in vulnerable communities, including indigenous peoples.

Saskatoon’s Prairie Harm Reduction has begun providing clients with information about the risks and precautions associated with monkeypox.

Executive Director Kayla DeMong said groups like her have reason to be concerned because easily spread diseases and illnesses are a concern for agencies working with vulnerable people in Saskatchewan.

“It’s hard to put a lot of faith in our state.

Kayla DeMong, executive director of Prairie Harm Reduction, said there is reason to be concerned because groups like her work with vulnerable people. (submitted by Kayla DeMong)

She attributes it to a lack of consideration from those leading the fight to contain these diseases.

“Even if you make a plan, it is often not carried out. [with] “We have vulnerable people in mind,” she said. “They’re made for the general public.

She said many Saskatoon-based organizations that work with vulnerable people meet regularly to discuss challenges facing their clients, including monkeypox.

On the other hand, the Department of Health will only say that the risk of contracting the disease in Saskatchewan is low and the state is watching cases closely.

“The Saskatchewan Department of Health is working with Public Health Canada to investigate all reports of potential monkeypox cases in Saskatchewan. “It is advised to consider monkeypox in the differential diagnosis of patients who present with severe symptoms such as rash, and other clinical signs consistent with monkeypox,” read a written statement provided by the ministry.

The statement also indicates that information is being disseminated.

“Public awareness and education are being provided through the Saskatchewan government website, social media, and various outreach activities. The Saskatchewan Department of Health is currently conducting outreach activities with identified high-risk groups. The Ministry of Health is also working with a range of organizations, including community organizations and businesses (food banks, gyms, clubs, etc.) to better inform the public about potential risks. is needed.”
