Jamestown Canyon Virus: First Case Reported in New Hampshire This Year

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has announced that adults from Loudon, New Hampshire tested positive for the Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV). The person was hospitalized for neurological symptoms, was discharged, and is recovering at home. This is the first detection of a mosquito-borne disease in the state this year. JCV is transmitted by being bitten by an infected mosquito. There is no vaccine to prevent JCV and treatment includes supportive care.

“In addition to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there are other threats of infection to New Hampshire residents, including mosquito and tick bites. The Jamestown Canyon virus can be transmitted by mosquito bites in New Hampshire. It’s one of the most common infectious diseases,” states state epidemiologist Dr Benjamin Chan. “When people are out of their homes, they must continue to take steps to protect themselves and others from COVID-19, as well as to protect against mosquito and tick bites.”

The Jamestown Canyon virus is a mosquito-borne pathogen that spreads in North America, primarily between deer and mosquitoes, but can also infect humans. Human recognition has increased over the past few years as awareness and testing for this virus has increased. This is the 10th JCV case since it was first reported in New Hampshire in 2013. Many illnesses caused by JCV are mild, but moderate to severe central nervous system involvement requiring hospitalization, including fatal infections, has been reported.
