Monkeypox Recognition on Westfield State University Agenda as Campus Reopens
WESTFIELD — As the number of monkeypox cases continues to rise, local health and school officials prepare to educate college students who have returned to environments that could help spread the disease.
Westfield State University freshmen will begin arriving on campus on September 2nd, while the rest of the students will return to campus on September 5th. It is a disease that spreads much more slowly than COVID-19 and is spread through situations of close, usually intimate contact, which in many settings often occurs on college campuses.
A functional vaccine for monkeypox, originally designed for smallpox, already exists, but so far population distribution has proven difficult. Westfield Supervised Public Health Debra Malvena, a nurse, said she does not recommend that all Westfield State students be vaccinated against monkeypox.
