India develops first cervical cancer vaccine

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – The Serum Institute of India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine maker, has developed the country’s first cervical cancer vaccine and will soon hit the market, the company and the government said on Thursday. Announced.
According to the World Health Organization, cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide, with an estimated 604,000 new cases and 342,000 deaths in 2020. About 90% of new infections and deaths worldwide occurred in low- and middle-income countries that year.
At least 70% of cervical cancers are caused by two types of human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18, and India’s Ministry of Biotechnology has stated that India’s vaccines contain HPV types 16 and 18, and HPV types 6 and 11. It says that the type has an effect.

“The independently developed vaccine will make our country self-sufficient in reducing female mortality from cervical cancer,” SII CEO Adar Poonawala said in a statement.
He told reporters that the vaccine would be marketed first to the Indian market and then to the rest of the world within months. The price could be between 200 and 400 rupees ($2.51 to $5.03) and the company aims to produce about 200 million doses in two years, said a Reuters partner. ANI quoted Mr. Poonawalla in his remarks.
The vaccine is given in two doses for ages 9 to 14 and three injections for ages 15 to 26.
