Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV) – More Wisconsins are now allowed to be vaccinated against monkeypox after state health officials expanded eligibility criteria on Tuesday.
The Wisconsin Department of Health has reported 63 cases of monkeypox/orthovirus detected as of 6 September. Officials note that 98% of his cases are male.
New eligible groups include those who are at high risk of future exposure to the virus, such as those who work in laboratories testing for orthopoxviruses and those who are expected to have multiple sexual partners. .
DHS secretary-designate Karen Timberlake said Tuesday that allowing more people to get vaccinated is another step to prevent the spread of monkeypox.
“It is encouraging that the rate of new monkeypox infections is declining, and this decision will help protect even more Wisconsins from monkeypox,” Timberlake said. “DHS urges anyone who is eligible to be vaccinated to do so.”
Data collected on monkeypox also show a disproportionate impact on the number of infections in communities of color across the state, DHS said. It was noted that more than half of all monkeypox cases in the state are in communities of color. DHS encourages vaccinators to step up their commitment to communities most affected and to partner with organizations that serve communities of color.
We have 58 sites give monkeypox Wisconsin vaccine, DHS added. Those unable to make an appointment at a vaccine location are encouraged to call their local or tribal health department.
DHS says anyone who meets the following criteria is eligible to be vaccinated:
- Known contacts identified by Public Health through case investigation, contact tracing, and risk exposure assessment.
- A probable contact who may meet the following criteria:
- Know that a sexual partner has been diagnosed with monkeypox in the last 14 days.
- People who have attended an event or venue with known monkeypox exposure.
- Gay men, bisexual men, transgender men and women, all men who have sex with men, and gender nonconforming/nonbinary people who have had multiple sexual partners in the past 14 days.
- People who may be at increased risk of monkeypox in the future:
- Gay men, bisexual men, transgender men and women, all men who have sex with men, and gender non-conforming/non-binary people who expect to have multiple or anonymous sex partners. may include people living with HIV or those who have been previously exposed to HIV because they are at increased risk of sexually transmitted infections.
- Clinical laboratory personnel performing tests to diagnose orthopoxviruses, including those using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays to diagnose orthopoxviruses, including monkeypox virus.
- Laboratories that directly handle cultures or animals contaminated or infected with orthopoxviruses that infect humans, including monkeypox virus, replication-competent vaccinia virus, or recombinant vaccinia viruses derived from replication-competent vaccinia virus strains worker.
- Certain health care providers who work in sexual health clinics or other specialized facilities that directly care for patients with sexually transmitted infections.
