Forehead thermometer may be less accurate in black patients, study warns – The Hill

A forehead thermometer uses infrared radiation to measure temperature. A device’s ability to pick up radiation can be affected by something called skin emissivity. Skin emissivity is the amount of light, radiation, and heat emitted by the skin and can be affected by skin pigmentation.
In a study from Emory UniversityResearchers are looking at data from about 2,000 black patients and 2,000 white patients from 2014 to 2021. They had their temperature taken briefly on the first day of hospitalization with both forehead and oral thermometers. For black patients, the forehead thermometer was 26% less likely to detect fever than the oral thermometer. There was no significant difference in Caucasian patients.
Missing fever in black patients can delay diagnosis and potentially Increased risk of death down the line. “If no fever is detected, the alert is not activated,” said Sivasubramanium Bhavani, lead author of the study and an assistant professor at Emory University. NPR“Differences in fever detection may lead to delays in antibiotics and medical care in black patients.”
Health care experts have also noted racial bias in oximeters used to measure blood oxygen levels, especially during the pandemic. JAMA Internal Medicine Pulse oximeter studies found that “differences in oxygen administration between Asian, Black, Hispanic and Caucasian patients were associated with pulse oximeter performance and racial and ethnic differences in care. This may have contributed to inequality.”
The authors of this thermometer study say the error could be due to not properly scanning a person’s forehead. A small study found no difference in skin emissivity when comparing people grouped by skin pigmentation.
