Nova Scotia opens pre-exposure monkeypox vaccine clinic
Nova Scotia will soon make monkeypox vaccine available to those most at risk of exposure, including members of the LGBTQ community.
The Halifax Sexual Health Center will host a free pre-exposure clinic the week of Sept. 19, the state said in a news release Friday.
The state confirmed its first case of monkeypox in Nova Scotia on August 23rd.
Nova Scotia Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Strang said in a release:
“By ensuring that people at highest risk of exposure to the virus have access to the vaccine prior to potential exposure, we can help protect against the virus, limit its spread and reduce severe symptoms. ”

The vaccine program is only open to Nova Scotia residents or people who reside in Nova Scotia for an extended period of time, including post-secondary school students. It must also meet one of the following criteria:
1. A cisgender or transgender queer, two-spirit or nonbinary person who has had sexual contact with a cisgender or transgender queer, two-spirit or nonbinary person and who:
- Have or plan to have two or more sexual partners as defined above in the past three months.
- Diagnosed with a bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the past 3 months.
- Participated, worked, or volunteered at a sexual contact event/social place, such as a bathhouse or sex club, within the past 3 months.
- Have had or plan to have anonymous sex within the past 3 months.
- Engaged or intending to be a sex work worker or client.
or
2. Those who have a sexual relationship with those who meet the above conditions.
Reservation details will be announced next week. There are also plans to expand the vaccine program to non-HRM communities.
