Detecting the virus in the air is usually difficult because the fluid expelled from an infected person’s mouth is so small. Promisingly, the team’s sensors detected viral proteins present in as little as 0.3 microliters of liquid. This is almost 1/600th of the amount of liquid released by coughing or talking.

“Our masks work very well in poorly ventilated spaces such as elevators and enclosed rooms where the risk of infection is high,” Feng said.

The team plans to tweak the mask’s design to make it more sensitive and detect the virus more quickly. They also plan to use the technology in wearable devices that can detect other diseases.
