People who have bad dreams in middle age are more likely to be diagnosed with dementia in the future

A study from the University of Birmingham found that people who have frequent bad dreams in middle age are more likely to be diagnosed with dementia later in life.

A new study published in The Lancet electronic clinical medicinesuggests that nightmares can be prevalent years or decades before the onset of memory and thinking problems characteristic of dementia.

We demonstrate for the first time that distressing dreams and nightmares may be associated with dementia risk and cognitive decline in healthy adults in the general population.

This is important because few risk indicators for dementia are identifiable early in middle age. Although more research is needed to confirm these associations, bad dreams could be a useful way to identify individuals at high risk of developing dementia and develop strategies to delay the onset of the disease. I’m here.”

Dr. Abidemi Otaik, Center for Human Brain Health, University of Birmingham

For this study, Dr. Otaiku examined data from three community-based cohorts in the United States. These included his more than 600 adult men and women, aged 35 to he was 64. 2,600 adults aged 79 and over. All participants were dementia-free at study entry and were followed for an average of 9 years in the younger group and 5 years in the older participants.

The study began collecting data between 2002 and 2012. Participants completed various questionnaires, including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which included questions about how often they experienced nightmares.

This data was analyzed using statistical software to see if participants with more nightmares were more likely to experience cognitive decline and be diagnosed with dementia.

The study found that middle-aged people (ages 35-64) who have weekly nightmares were four times more likely to experience cognitive decline over the next 10 years, and older adults were more likely to be diagnosed with dementia. has been shown to be twice as high.

Interestingly, the study found that the association was much stronger in men than in women. were five times more likely to develop dementia than those who

Next steps in research include whether nightmares in young people may be associated with future dementia risk, and whether other dream characteristics, such as frequency of remembered dreams and dream vividness, may also be associated with dementia risk. includes investigating whether it can be used to identify The researchers also plan to use electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the biological basis of nightmares in both healthy and demented people.
